What is Stress?

Everybody experiences stress in different forms and degrees on a daily basis.  Stress is natural and helpful to a certain degree.  A healthy level of stress increases our energy levels, increases our alertness, and helps us to keep us focussed. 

Stress is beneficial to people when it helps faster decision-making, helps better short-term judgment, increases determination, or enhances the ability to focus.  However, we can achieve a level of stress that we are not able to cope with and this is where stress becomes problematic.

Among the most common stressors are:

Stress is not meant to be a prolonged state. If prolonged without alternating relaxation it may manifest itself physically, emotionally, or through behavior.

  • Family (children)
  • Moving home
  • New job or promotion
  • Relationship problems
  • Financial problems
  • Violence or accident
  • Exams

Symptoms of stress

Emotional Symptoms

  • Being moody
  • Being irritable
  • Being agitated
  • Feeling overwhelmed
  • Feeling isolated
  • Feeling depressed

Cognitive Symptoms

  • Memory loss
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Poor judgment
  • Negativity
  • Anxiety
  • Worrying

Behavioral Symptoms

  • Change in eating pattern
  • Change in sleeping pattern
  • Avoiding social events
  • Procrastination
  • Alcohol or drug abuse

Physical Symptoms

  • Aches and pains
  • Stomach problems
  • Nausea, dizziness
  • Chest pain, heart-pounding
  • Loss of sex drive
  • Frequent colds

Treatment for Stress

Psychotherapy will help the individual understand their thought process and help them react in a more positive way to life events that are causing excessive stress.  Relaxation techniques might be introduced as part of the therapy.
